The Fortress Resort and Spa is regarded as one of the top resorts on the south coast. An all-round deluxe hotel, with attractive and spacious accommodation.
The Fortress Resort and Spa is regarded as one of the top resorts on the south coast. The hotel takes its design influence from the Portuguese and Dutch-inspired fort at Galle, which is 20 minutes away.
The atmosphere here is sophisticated yet relaxed. The interiors feature a stunning collection of Sri Lankan contemporary art, with pieces by local artists adorning the walls throughout the property. There’s an almost meditative quality to the spaces, with clean lines, natural materials, and the constant sound of waves crashing against the rocks below.
The resort sits on a 6-acre clifftop site, offering unobstructed views of the ocean horizon. You’re perfectly positioned to explore the historic Dutch colonial architecture of Galle Fort and its cobblestone streets, boutique shops, and rampart walls.
The nearby Koggala Lake is just a short drive away and home to the famous stilt fishermen of Koggala – those iconic silhouettes balancing on wooden poles.
Colombo airport is just under a 3-hour drive.
The Fortress Resort and Spa’s 53 Rooms & Suites have bright and contemporary interiors, either facing the courtyard pool or towards the beach, whilst the exterior has a colonial sleek elegance.
You have a choice of 49 guest rooms.
- The entry level are the Courtyard Rooms (formerly called Fortress rooms), which are on the ground and upper floors and face the courtyard
- You then have 22 Ocean rooms which are on the upper floor with views of the ocean from the balcony
- The 12 Beach Rooms are ground floor with direct access to the gardens and onto the beach
- The 4 Beach Splash Rooms additionally have an indoor plunge pool
- In the suite category, you have 2 Ocean Loft Suites, which are duplexes with indoor plunge pool and elevated bedroom
- The 2 Fortress Residence Suites on the upper floor, with a spacious bedroom and separate living room and probably the best views in the hotel,
- Several restaurants
- Swimming pool
- Fitness centre
- One of the largest spas
- Snorkelling and diving trips can be arranged to explore the coral reefs offshore
- The beach here is attractive, but as is common with this coastline, the sea is probably best appreciated by the more confident swimmer, and you do need to strictly adhere to local warnings and advice
Outside the Resort
- The nearby Koggala Lake offers boat trips through mangrove forests, and you can visit traditional mask-making workshops in Ambalangoda
- For culture enthusiasts, the resort organises visits to local temples, spice gardens, and traditional craft workshops
- The famous Geoffrey Bawa-designed Brief Garden is within easy reach, offering insight into Sri Lankan landscape architecture
- Tea plantation tours to the hill country can be arranged as day trips
The Fortress Resort and Spa is a good all-round deluxe hotel, with appeal to couples and families with attractive, spacious accommodation.
In the last few years, the hotel has undergone some subtle and rather expensive enhancements without detracting from its essential style.

+ About Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka is shaped like a tropical teardrop, fantastic scenic and cultural variety. It is exotic, with wonderful history and culture, eco-adventures and wildlife viewing, and wide smiles. In recent years the quality of accommodation has improved significantly, with many boutique heritage hotels and wonderfully luxurious resorts. The image of the island has moved more upscale – as have the prices – but we now rate it as one of the most exciting tropical destinations.
The beaches are good, but for us the real joy of the island is to tour around, staying in the very special boutique hotels and then end in a resort for a few days. The flying time from UK is 12 hours.

All price guides are Per Person Sharing Double Room (Entry level), based on travel between May and/or June when prices are generally at their lowest and include promotional offers. Supplements will probably apply at other times, particularly mid-summer in the Med, and for rooms and/or transfers arranged for single travellers.
For example, the Caribbean and Indian Ocean prices for winter can be approximately double the May - June level and about 50% more in Asia. For the Mediterranean & Canary Islands, Caribbean, Arabia and the Indian Ocean (except Sri Lanka) price guides generally include airfare and transfers.
*For Sri Lanka and Far East we show a per-person, per-night hotel guide, excluding air fare, as arrangements tend to be individually tailored multi-centre itineraries.
