La Veranda is Regarded as one of the top hotels on the island. Come for the colonial sense of style, a delightfully laid back atmosphere, well-appointed accommodation, mature tropical gardens and the beach.
The island of Phou Quoc is just one hour flight south-west of Saigon, close to the border with Cambodia. Known for its relaxed atmosphere and superb beaches, La Veranda is one of best-known hotels , and despite increased competition it remains a popular choice with European clients .
The island, which is located within the Gulf of Thailand, is generally at its best January through to August, with the autumn months having the highest rainfall.  10 years ago the island was hardly known and catered for a few backpackers . Farming , fishing and the production of fish sauce and black pepper were the main industries . Now it is one of the fastest growing destinations in SE Asia with numerous hotels , with some seeming to cater totally for the regional ( mainly Chinese ) markets . La Veranda has a different appeal , with a classic French ” Ginger Bread ” design , elegant but almost intentionally not opulent , subtle comforts , attractive mature tropical gardens leading down to an attractive beach .
La Veranda is a 15 minutes drive from the airport.
La Veranda is designed in a French colonial style, with simple elegance. The 70 rooms and villas continue the traditional theme with wooden floors and chic Vietnamese touches.
Most of the rooms are located within the main building, although you also have 21 free standing villas.
Most rooms have 4 poster beds, so twin rooms need to specifically requested.
Choice of restaurant, plus there are a few options close by

Attractive beach
The island has some eco-adventure jungle trails and pearl farms
La Veranda is Regarded as one of the top hotels on the island. Come for the colonial sense of style, a delightfully laid back atmosphere, well-appointed accommodation, mature tropical gardens and the beach.
There is easy access to the town, where you will find some simple authentic dining options plus several more on the road leading into town
Phu Quoc is developing fast. Expect to see many hotels under construction , and yes there are already pockets of tourism excess . Just a decade ago the emphasis was on farming and fishing, but tourism is now the dominant industry. It is a good beach option to consider after a tour of the south of Vietnam. Best in the winter / spring months when the weather is generally at its most settled .
For many mainland Vietnamese, working on Phu Quoc is considered to be a “hardship posting ” so it is quite difficult to attract good regional staff. Pleasant yes, but communication might be difficult. High demand for the really good ones from the every growing hotel openings does not help the situation.
There are several 50 minutes flights daily from Saigon. There are also flights from Bangkok, Siem Reap and Singapore.
Note – If you are flying from Singapore & Bangkok and are just visiting the island of Phu Quoc, you do not require the usual visa for Vietnam.

David Revisits Thailand 2022

COVID-19 - Updated Information – March 2023.
Virtually all countries worldwide have relaxed their protocols on Covid and there are very few restrictions. However, most countries review this on a month-by-month basis and will take immediate action should cases return or increase.
As a general statement, we would say travel is back to about 90% of its 2019 pre-covid levels – although with maybe less staff than before. This can particularly apply to airports with check-in teams and baggage handlers, and also in hotels. If you are a long-time repeat visitor to a specific hotel it is quite possible you might know your way around the property better than the newly appointed staff – smile and maybe even try to assist!

All price guides are Per Person Sharing Double Room (Entry level), based on travel between May and/or June when prices are generally at their lowest and include promotional offers. Supplements will probably apply at other times, particularly mid-summer in the Med, and for rooms and/or transfers arranged for single travellers.
For example, the Caribbean and Indian Ocean prices for winter can be approximately double the May - June level and about 50% more in Asia. For the Mediterranean & Canary Islands, Caribbean, Arabia and the Indian Ocean (except Sri Lanka) price guides generally include airfare and transfers.
*For Sri Lanka and Far East we show a per person per night hotel guide, excluding air fare, as arrangements tend to be individually tailored multi-centre itineraries.
