The Royal Sands Koh Rong—Cambodian island retreat with a superb white sand beach
The Royal Sands Koh Rong
is a delightful, simply luxurious island retreat. The appeal is the deliberate less-is-more relaxed style, emphasising the beauty of the nature surrounding you with the immediate beach stretching over 500 m.
Koh Rong is known for its superb beaches with a dense forest backdrop and laid-back ambiance. It can be a perfect chill-out retreat during a tour around the region. Koh Rong is the largest of the Cambodian islands yet has a resident population of just over 4000 people, mainly spread between 4 small villages.
The nearest airport is Sihanoukville, and from there you transfer to the ferry point, about 30 minutes away, and then continue by the resort’s own high-speed boat for another 45 minutes.
The Royal Sands Koh Rong has a selection of 67 whitewashed freestanding villas, spread over 3 rows. All are junior suite style with integrated living space.
You have a choice of:
- Ocean view or beachfront villas with 79 sqm of total living space
- There are several villas with their own swimming pool offering 147 sqm of total in & out living space
- For Families or friends, there are also a couple of two-bedroom pool villas and one three-bedroom beach villa
Due to the tropical foliage and vegetation growth, the accommodation will be reclassified from autumn 2026. The room sizes & facilities are unchanged.
So you will have:
- Superior Villa
- Ocean View Villa
- Beachfront Villa
- Deluxe Villa with pool
- Ocean villa with pool
- Beachfront Villa with pool
- Plus the 2/3 Bedroom Pool Villas
- The beach, of course
- A selection of mainly non-motorized water sports (weather dependent)
- Swimming pool
- Choice of restaurant location
- Spa room and gym
- The resort can arrange tours to local villages, island exploration on land and sea, bike hire, and cruises
This is a delightful feet-in-the-sand, chill-out retreat. The villas at The Royal Sands Koh Rong are spacious and well-designed.
The appeal will be to couples and families. There are no specific facilities for younger children, apart from a playroom and what nature has provided, with the sea and beach keeping most happy.
Koh Rong generally enjoys its best weather from November to May, when the days are usually bright and sunny and the sea is turquoise blue and calm. June to October can see more rainfall and red flags.
You can easily combine it with a tour around Cambodia or neighbouring countries. There are flights from Siem Reap to Sihanoukville (about 50 minutes), and the road transfer to Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia, takes just under 3 hours. Sihanoukville is a large city that can be visited in a day. In our frank opinion, it has limited appeal for most European travellers.
As with most tropical retreat islands, you need to be aware of the realities of insects, especially sand flies, particularly at dawn and dusk, although resort management takes daily action to minimise any issues.
Marie-Helene & David from Chic stayed here in spring 2025 and would be delighted to discuss the resort in greater detail and, indeed, Cambodia in general.
