Description & Location

Phnom Penh is the capital, largest city, and commercial centre of Cambodia. The present population is just over 2 million, out of 30 million for the entire country.

Whilst it has become modernised in recent years, expanding out & up, it retains a historical charm in many areas. The old colonial French influence is apparent in the older buildings and shops and, of course, the tree-lined boulevards.

It maybe doesn’t have the instant appeal of, say, Bangkok or Singapore, but for those looking for something new and an understanding of the history of the region just 50 years ago, it can be fascinating.

The Mekong River cuts through the city and is a popular area, with walking streets running alongside. The majestic temple of Wat Phnom is impressive, and the Central Market is atmospheric and interesting – and very well priced.

The Toul Sleng Genocide Museum reflects the atrocities of the Khmer Rouge against their own people in the 1970s and is a sobering experience. Not exactly enjoyable, but it shows how far Cambodia has progressed in a relatively short time. David from Chic compares it to visiting Auschwitz with maybe even more harrowing graphics.

The existing international airport will close in autumn 2025, and a new one will be opened across town. Both are about a 60-minute taxi ride from the central areas.

Phnom Penh may be best appreciated by those who are familiar with Southeast Asia rather than first-time visitors.

We have a specific feature on the boutique-styled La Rose Suites, but Phnom Penh has many attractive hotel alternatives on offer.

Sofitel Phnom Penh with its combination of colonial French design mixed with contemporary comforts and on-site sporting facilities.

The high-rise luxury of The Rosewood with its impressive views of the city.

For those requiring a riverside retreat in a quiet location 50 minutes drive outside the city, The Bale is particularly suggested.
