Saint Lucia – Simply Beautiful…
Instantly romantic, with dense forest, mountain peaks, flowing rivers, banana plantations and ramshackle charming villages.
The main resort area of Saint Lucia is in the north-west of the island, around Rodney Bay and Cap Estate, 90 minutes from the international airport which is located on the south coast. Here you will see the greatest development of hotels and villas and a good selection of restaurants, shopping malls and some quite lively bars. Probably the best golden sand beaches, particularly Reduit at Rodney Bay which is long and expansive but can get busy, especially when cruise ships visit. The transfer from the international airport is scenic as you initially travel along the wilder Atlantic coast before crossing through banana plantations and dense forest before emerging onto the Caribbean (west) coast.
There is also a smaller domestic airport in the north of Saint Lucia, accepting regional flights only, and is located a few minutes out of the Castries which is the island capital. There are plans to upgrade Castries, but currently is has little appeal to most tourists.
On the lower south-west coast, you have the majestic Piton twin peaks, the setting of the spectacular Anse Chastanet/Jade Mountain Resort. Much more remote, totally tropical and wonderfully scenic with volcanic sand beaches. Real Hide and Chic escapism, some of the best snorkelling and diving in the region. The resorts in this area tend to be more self-contained, with limited restaurant options once outside the gates.
Twin centre combinations within the island are well worth considering as this would give you some interesting scenic contrasts.
The two location options are very different. Choose the south-west for the dramatic scenery, the water contrasts, volcanic sand beaches the total escapism, but your activity will be mainly resort based. Go to the north if you want restaurant options, shopping and gold sand beaches although some might be busy.
Weatherwise
The most popular months for Saint Lucia are November to May, when the days are usually bright and sunny. However, as the island is green and lush, you can have rainfall year round, particularly in the more mountainous south, usually in short sharp bursts. In the months June to October you can have tropical storms and on occasion cyclones.
Best Time to visit
The hotel prices reflect the weather pattern, with the winter rates the most expensive, and then they drop in the spring and summer. So it really depends on your priorities and budget.
