Puri Mas Boutique Resort is authentic & charming, offering delightful simplicity.
Puri Mas has a super friendly team and attractive gardens – with some fearsome and jolly authentic statues – offering a true sense of destination.
It is not luxurious in the usual sense, just exceedingly good value. Starts off pleasant and ends with an enjoyable note, seemingly leaving you wanting more.
Puri Mas is located in Mangsit Bay on the west coast, close to the relatively lively – by Lombok levels – resort area of Senggigi (5 minutes’ taxi ride).
The airport is located in the centre of the island, about a 45-minute scenic drive. There are a couple of ferry terminals ranging from 15 to 25 minutes’ drive, with numerous services daily to the Gili Islands and Bali, which is about 3 hours away depending on service.
Puri Mas Boutique Resort has a total of 45 rooms. Most are single-storey units with just a couple on the upper floor.
You have a choice of:
- Quirky Garden View rooms
- Classic rooms
- Royal Suite
- Jacuzzi Villa with plunge pool
- Romantic Villa with enclosed garden and pool
- Finally, the seafront three-bedroom Buddha Villa or the four-bedroom Presidential Villa, which has accommodated some of Indonesia’s finest, including their previous president, Megawati.
The design style is traditional Lombok, with some interesting artefacts and pictures.
The rooms do not have telephones – deliberately – but your phone will be connected to reception upon arrival.
- Swimming pool
- Restaurant located on the beachfront serving mainly Indonesian dishes but with European and Indian options
- Adjacent garden relaxing area plus a beachfront infinity swimming pool
- Puri Mas also has complimentary yoga for guests and their own spa resort located about 8 minutes’ drive inland – reception will give you details on request and arrange their free shuttle
- The immediate beach is rocky, but swimming is OK just 50 yards to your right. As is common on this side of Lombok, the sand tends to be darker but changes with the seasons
- There are four other hotels along the beach area, so you have dining options within strolling distance
- Diving and snorkelling as well as tours are easily arranged via reception, as there is an in-house dive operator available
I stayed here in November 2025. Initial impression was good, but then it really grew on me, mainly because of the traditional style and the big smiles in reception and in the restaurant.
Nothing was too much trouble. It was just charming, maybe in an old-fashioned personal way. And listening to the conversations around the dinner table, it seemed many clients, particularly from the UK and Australia, were repeat travellers, which is always a good endorsement. It is not luxurious, but then neither are the prices. I rather enjoyed it

Lombok
Take time to explore Lombok; it is developing but at a much slower horse pace than supercharged Bali – actually, apart from being almost the same size and having similar scenery, the islands are very different. Lombok is located on the offside of the “Wallace Line”, hence making it Australasia, not Asia. Worth discovering more!
Lombok has several little villages, but it would not be the choice for shopping, bars and nightlife. It is a Muslim-majority island, so the call to prayers is audible.
The dense jungle backdrop, home to the grey macaque and rarer black monkeys, can be seen along the attractive coast road, and there are several waterfalls to visit. For the more active visitors, a 3-day climb up the second-highest volcano in Indonesia, Mount Rinjani, should be on the bucket list.
The Gili Islands are just a 20-minute speedboat ride away, and one or all three can be visited on a day trip, as can the “Secret Gili’s” just 90 minutes away towards the south of the island.
