CHIC CHECK

Hotel 137 Pillars House is a super relatively  new addition to the Chiang Mai hotel scene. The hotel opened in mid 2012, to instant acclaim. The design is spectacular, fully capturing the elegance of by-gone days, but with a pleasing acceptance of contemporary facilities. The old colonial house was built in the early 1800’s as a house designated to foreigners by the Siam Government, and it was built around the construction of 137 pillars, hence the name.

The history of the place is fascinating. The Europeans  came up from Sarawak in Malaysia, seeking the King of Siam’s approval to enter into the teak trade. They brought with them a Governess, Anna (Leon)  Owen, who later became the personal tutor to the King’s children –  The original  story of The King & I.
