Fort Young Hotel is regarded as the most established hotel on the island, with an attractive location and good facilities.
The Fort Young Hotel is built on the site of the original French fort, dating back to 1699. The Fort Young Hotel is located on the edge of the capital, Roseau, directly facing the waterfront.
The international airport Douglas Charles Airport (formerly Melville Hall) is a scenic cross-island transfer of 70 minutes. The Ferry Terminal with boats from the neighbouring French islands of Guadeloupe and Martinique, as well as St Lucia, is 3 minutes by taxi or a 5-minute walk.
Within the images shown, we have included some general scenes of Dominica to give you an idea of the very different island style . It is not called The Nature Island without good reason. There are 29 waterfalls and over 300 rivers. The tour desk at Fort Young can assist with adventure tours ranging from “easy access” to the “need to be fit”.
Marie-Helene (MH) at Chic originates from Dominica and still has strong links with the island, including our featured hotels. She would be happy to discuss in detail.
Fort Young Hotel has 100 rooms and suites. 60 are in the new section, opened in November 2023, offering either Mountain or Sea Facing views.
Several are interconnecting depending on the view. The remainder are Ocean Front, located in the original section, with deluxe rooms, and Junior and One Bedroom suites. All are bright and contemporary, with historical themes such as regional maps.
There are numerous steps and pathways linking the various sections and facilities. There are lifts but some walking is required.
The hotel offers rates including breakfast or has an Island Inclusive option with full board plus daily touring activities. Ask us for details.
We particularly suggest the oceanfront rooms and suites for their extra space, style, and location.
The hotel also offers a Dominican version of Island All-Inclusive with some meals, drinks, and island tours included. There are several options – ask us for details so we can suggest the most suitable for your stay based on your requirements. The tours are designed to show you the simple natural beauty of the island with its high mountains, waterfalls and rivers, dense forests, and charming ramshackle villages.

The Fort Young Hotel & Dive Resort offers a unique swimming with whales experience. For many, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to explore the ocean alongside its most magnificent creatures. Dominica is the only country where sperm whales can be seen year-round, with the highest sightings occurring between November and March. Juvenile and female sperm whales remain along the island’s coast throughout the year, while mature males migrate between polar regions and Dominica primarily to mate.
This phenomenal experience gets you up close and personal with Sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus), which are the largest predators on earth, reaching up to 70 feet/21 meters long, and weighing 60 tons. The Resort’s whale counter experience is the ultimate combination of swimming with the whales, morning dives & afternoon land excursions. The perfect getaway.

Car hire is suggested as this will allow you to discover the island, and particularly visiting the wild Atlantic coast and Carib Reserve.
Roseau, the capital, has a ramshackle charm and offers several restaurant options. It is easy to explore with its lively fruit and vegetable market, cobbled streets and rather colourful, frequently crumbling, French- Creole-influenced buildings.
Fort Young Hotel is regarded as the most established hotel on the island, with an attractive location and good facilities with a great sense of history.
The new wing opened in November 2023, called the Fort section, has 60 rooms, almost evenly split between mountain & sea view. The remaining 40 rooms are Oceanfront spread over three floors with the Caribbean sea literally lapping onto the rocks below. Luxury cruise ships berth just to the right of the hotel several times weekly and for a few hours the island is almost busy with Fort Young’s promenade bar being the cruise passenger’s choice to sample a local rum punch.
Dominica attracts those who are independent, adventurous, and curious, and offers a very different experience from the usual sun and sand holiday offered by the more developed islands. The pleasures here are simple, relaxed, and easy-going; It is called the Nature Island, with a focus on mountains, rivers, volcanoes and forests. It is not the place for the self-important and ultra-demanding shopaholics, although the Colombian Emerald shop within the hotel can be awfully tempting.
It is one of the largest islands in the Caribbean, and least populated. Dominicans tend also to live longer which might be a testimony to their diet or their deliberate slow-paced lifestyle.
There are no direct flights from the UK into Dominica which we think rather adds to the escapist attraction. There are improved air links with Antigua, Barbados, and St Lucia so twin or triple island combinations are easy to arrange.

All price guides are Per Person Sharing Double Room (Entry level), based on travel between May and/or June when prices are generally at their lowest and include promotional offers. Supplements will probably apply at other times, particularly mid-summer in the Med, and for rooms and/or transfers arranged for single travellers.
For example, the Caribbean and Indian Ocean prices for winter can be approximately double the May - June level and about 50% more in Asia. For the Mediterranean & Canary Islands, Caribbean, Arabia and the Indian Ocean (except Sri Lanka) price guides generally include airfare and transfers.
*For Sri Lanka and Far East we show a per-person, per-night hotel guide, excluding air fare, as arrangements tend to be individually tailored multi-centre itineraries.
