Eastern & Oriental Hotel has a great location, the perfect base for exploring Georgetown and the island of Penang.
Known throughout the region simply as The E&O hotel, this is grand colonial style at the highest level. Eastern & Oriental Hotel was originally opened in 1885 by the Sarkies Brothers (Iranian Armenian traders), it was part of the first luxury brand of hotels in South East Asia with others including Raffles in Singapore and The Strand in Rangoon Burma – now Yangon, Myanmar. Over the years the E&O has been lovingly renovated and enhanced yet still retains the ambience of a bi-gone era.
It is located on the seafront of Georgetown, the bustling capital of Penang. The city centre with its historical interest and maze of small streets and China Town area is about 25 minutes’ walk, Gurney Drive Hawker “ street food “ centre about 15 minutes and the airport 25 minutes. The Batu Ferringhi beach and resort area are about 15 minutes drive south.
The Eastern & Oriental Hotel has 232 rooms and suites split between the original Heritage Wing and the much more recent Victory Annexe.
In the Heritage wing, you have a mixture of regular and speciality themed suites, all spacious starting at 57sqm for a One bedroom.
A choice of courtyard or sea-facing. It is this wing that offers a real sense of history. The wing offers Butler service, and evening canapes and cocktails are served in the Cornwallis Bar.
The newer Victory Annexe has 132 Studio Suites and Corner Suites and offers a slightly more contemporary style, in and out.
- Several themed restaurants and bars with evocative names such as Farquhar’s Bar and Planters Lounge & Palm Court
- There is no beach but a lawn area coming to the seafront
Eastern & Oriental Hotel has a great location, the perfect base for exploring Georgetown and the island of Penang.
Spend time at the hotel just taking in the ambiance, with the many little corners of history filled with black and white pictures and genuine antiques. It is incredibly atmospheric and, for the right client, a real experience.
The accommodation in the Victory Annex wing offers the lowest price but for a sense of occasion, we would personally prefer the total experience offered by the club-style Heritage Wing.
Georgetown has re-invented itself in the last few years and is lively, with a historic charm and contemporary adventurous vibe to it. Especially in the choice of dining, plus good shopping in the old quarter or in upscale malls.

All price guides are Per Person Sharing Double Room (Entry level), based on travel between May and/or June when prices are generally at their lowest and include promotional offers. Supplements will probably apply at other times, particularly mid-summer in the Med, and for rooms and/or transfers arranged for single travellers.
For example, the Caribbean and Indian Ocean prices for winter can be approximately double the May - June level and about 50% more in Asia. For the Mediterranean & Canary Islands, Caribbean, Arabia and the Indian Ocean (except Sri Lanka) price guides generally include airfare and transfers.
*For Sri Lanka and Far East we show a per-person, per-night hotel guide, excluding air fare, as arrangements tend to be individually tailored multi-centre itineraries.
