St Kitts & Nevis – Two sister islands, both attractive in their own way, yet each has its own style and personality.
The full name for St Kitts is St Christopher. Britain’s first permanent settlement in the Caribbean in 1623, four years ahead of Barbados. Over the years the island switched from British to French control and vice versa many times. Both islands rejoice in their traditional Caribbean hospitality.
St Kitts is slightly more developed, but both offer an interesting contrast to the more commercialised tourism now found on many other islands. Basseterre, the capital and located on St Kitts is one of the best planned and attractive cities in the region with great charm.
Nevis is even more laid back and tropical. Up to a few years ago, donkeys were still the favoured style of transport.
Why St Kitts & Nevis?
The islands have an old-time Caribbean charm, especially Nevis where time moves at a slow pace, even by regional standards!
St Kitts is marginally more developed but is still low key compared to the likes of Barbados, Antigua and St Lucia. Nevis has the better beaches, St Kitts has just a few. Take time to explore, you can drive around both islands in a day.
How To Get To St Kitts & Nevis
There are currently direct flights from London to St Kitt’s several times weekly. You can travel from St Kitts to Nevis by boat taking about 30 minutes, travelling over the slip of water called “The Narrows“ as at their nearest point the islands are just 3 miles apart.Best Time To Visit
As with all of the Caribbean the peak demand season is Mid December to Mid April. This is when the weather in the Caribbean is generally at its best with bright sunny days and maximum sunshine hours. It is also the time to escape the harsh winters in North America and most of Europe.
Weather
During the spring, summer and early autumn months the Caribbean becomes more humid, with an ever-present chance of a hard shower. The so-called hurricane season is officially July to October, with September usually the worse month although it is unusual for the same islands to be hit year after year.
If We Were To Be Critical…
Whilst St Kitts have some restaurant options outside of the hotels it will not be on the scale of Barbados or even Antigua. There is a small casino on the island but night life is generally low key. Nevis is totally laid back. night life can be a spontaneous party at the bar or a slamming game of dominoes in a rum shop! But for the right clients, that is all part of the attraction.
