You arrive into busy Phuket, with its developed infrastructure and numerous flights from Bangkok and all of the main cities in the region or from Gulf countries like Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Qatar. Plus there are good air links with Chiang Mai up in the north of Thailand, so combination holidays are easy to arrange.
But instead of turning left to go to the resorts of Phuket, you drive right. Within minutes you are crossing the causeway bridge linking Phuket to the mainland. And then it is a scenic 65-minute drive, through small towns & villages, with the Khao Sok National park and forest on your right and a glimpse of the Andaman Sea on your left.
In an hour you have arrived, maybe a little longer if you stop at one of the viewing points en route. The sprawling village of Khao Lak, with its small but lively markets, a few restaurants and bars, some tourist shopping, but most of all some glorious beaches. Yes, it is busier than a few years back, but by comparison to somewhere like Phuket or Samui, and most certainly Pattaya, this is a very different world.
Khao Lak remains charming, but in a slow paced relaxed way. Maybe not exciting in the accepted sense, but this is chill out time for the senses. And away from the beach, you have the eco-adventures of Khao Sok with its jungle treks, and towns like Takua Pa where you might be one of the few Europeans sampling the market.
There are now many hotels in Khao Lak, some established others new.
Here we highlight 3 Easily Accessible Beach Retreats in Khao Lak – All top quality. For convenience, we shall describe them as Trusted, Something Different and New.
Without hesitation, we have placed The Sarojin in the “Trusted” Category.
Incredible repeat business, constant innovation and enhancements. On the international stage a frequent (and fully deserved) award winner. MH and I have known the owners for over 15 years, having met just before the property opened. In our small way, Chic has contributed nicely to the ongoing success of this fabulous resort.

In the “New” Category, we have selected the impressive Devasom Beach Resort.
Opened in December 2018, highly contemporary design combined with traditional Thai warmth and flourishes. Just 69 rooms and suites. A super beach and good restaurant options on site, with some more a few minutes drive away. Head over to our Devasom Beach Resort & Villas page.
In the “Different” Category our choice would be the superb Le Menara Resort.
Le Menara is located in the quieter North Khao Lak area, which is a statement in itself. Total escapism! The joy here is that there is not much around! Incredible beach, huge swimming pool, and a selection of 104 Deluxe Rooms or Villas. Attractive main building rooms, but for something very special, look at the village themed suites built on stilts. Come with someone special. Find out what makes Le Menara so different here.
