A Luxury Collection Resort
Description and Location
Bl;ue Palace is built on a hillside with a lift taking you down to beach level. The design style is chic and contemporary, with clean lines and the emphasis very much on space, light and subtle summer colours. Add to this stunning views across to the easily accessible and historic island of Spinalonga (see note below). Heraklion Airport is one hour drive away, the tourist village of Elounda 20 minutes, and the more traditional village of Plaka just a few minutes walk where you will find a few simple attractive dining options.
The 251 rooms, suites and villas are grouped around the hillside, each with sea facing aspect. Many of the rooms and suites have their own swimming pools as do all the villas. Virtually every room and public area has a fantastic view of Spinalonga Island which is just a couple of minutes offshore by speedboat .
Facilities and Activities
Main facilities include three outdoor swimming pools, a selection of speciality restaurants in differing locations, bars, tennis courts, attractive spa, kids club. The pebble beach has wooden sundecks ensuring your access into the clear turquoise water is delightfully painless!
Chic Check – Blue Palace is perfectly chic. Stylish, instantly elegant, in a delightful minimalist way, that allows nature to compete for your deserved attention. Given the hotel is built on several levels with deliberately uneven pathways, it would not be ideal for those with mobility problems. The option of pre-purchasing half board is worth considering as this allows you to dine in any of the restaurants within the resort (supplement may apply to some items). See Early booking promotional offer for summer 2014.
Spinalonga Island rivals Knossos as one of the main attractions of Crete – in addition to The Blue Palace of course. Just 15 minutes by boat from the hotel, Spinalonga is not actually a natural island and was built as a fort attached to the northern coastline, but was then separated to make it more inaccessible to invaders. It has a wonderful and interesting history and has been featured in several films, notably ‘Who pays the Ferryman’, and more recently a book ‘The Island’ that has been adapted into a TV series.
Although most clients will prefer the direct flights from the UK to Heraklion, we are also able to offer the option of travelling via Athens on Aegean Airlines. We would particularly recommend staying at The Grande Bretagne (see feature on page 20) for at least 2/3 nights before flying on to Crete.
We can also make twin island combinations, and we think the idea of staying at The Mystique in Santorini, with its fantastic views, for a few days before travelling by high speed ferry on the short crossing to The Blue Palace would be a wonderfully romantic option. Ask us for suggestions and we are sure we can come up with something totally unique for you.
