There are many luxurious hotels in South East Asia, however I have a particular fondness for The Datai in Langkawi.
The setting is magnificent. Prehistoric jungle rain forest on three sides, leading down to a mile of soft sand beach front at Datai Bay. Fantastic accommodation, either located in the elevated main building, mostly with superb canopy views. Jungle Villas which are ideal for those wanting to be close to nature, then a selection of one and two bedroom beach front pool villas – undoubtedly some of the finest I have seen in the region.
A selection of restaurant locations, superb spa, a variety of non-motorised water sports and a championship golf course just a few minutes’ drive away. At Datai Bay you have just two hotels, The Datai which is centrally located, then to the right The Andaman. And that is one of the main attractions to me. Even when both hotels are running at high occupancy, the beach rarely seems busy, there is always space. You are within a 25 minute drive from the airport and some of the more commercialised resorts on the island, but the only guests you tend to see are those staying at either hotel. Although beaches in Malaysia are public, just as they are in Thailand and Indonesia, here at The Datai you do not seem to have the back packers and day trippers that flock to the more attractive resorts in other places, keen to share your little piece of “paradise” for just a few hours and something that can really impact your own sense of style.
If you are looking for something genuinely exclusive and top quality, are comfortable with nature – here you frequently see monkeys swinging through the jungle in front of you, like on site restaurant choice and more within 30 minutes’ drive – then The Datai comes highly recommended. It is essentially couples focused, although children are accepted.
Langkawi is generally at its best weather wise November to May. Prices from £1988 per person for 7 nights including air travel via Kuala Lumpur.
