My wife and I found paradise in Koh Kood Thailand. Unsurprisingly, it was just what we wanted…
I had been before but never stayed. It was MH ‘s first visit. Koh Kood island is wonderfully lush, totally tropical with dense forest, water falls and superb beaches. The Soneva Kiri perfectly captures the laid back style of the island. You can be active with island treks, diving and snorkelling, or just laze around the extensive resort enjoying the fantastic facilities.
There are 4 restaurants in very different locations, with each offer a great unique experience. My personal favourite was Benz, which is located in a mangrove, serving authentic Thai cuisine. The View was also pretty special. The treepod dining experience was totally unique. They hoist you up in a wooden pod to the top of the trees, the waiter takes your order and then returns on a zip wire with the food.
Our villa was huge. Massive indoor and outdoor living space. Private pool, of course, and totally surrounded by lush vegetation. Each villa has its own mini Moke to drive around the estate. We have a one bedroom villa overlooking the bay which was large enough to get lost in, but you can also go for larger villas ranging from two to six bedrooms.
The total design is typically Soneva. Stripped back, less-is-more style. Bamboo and rattan and local woods. Innovative touches everywhere. Our TV (DVD’s only, no international news) was hidden away in a folding suitcase, and the bathroom was modelled on two upright cases. The luxury comes in the deliberate simplicity, with a rejection of glitz and the ornate.
The main beach, North beach, is accessed by speedboat from the jetty, just three minutes. Superb soft sand and incredible water quality.
It is wonderfully tropical and you do need to be comfortable about living side by side with nature. As such it might not appeal to those who find the presence of a small frog or insect intimidating or frightening, and dense forest surrounds you at every point. but that is all part of the attraction.
We travelled by private charter from Bangkok, just 90 minutes flight. You then arrive on the neighbouring island airstrip, which is followed by 5 minutes speedboat to resort. It is incredibly romantic, although, this being Easter, there were so many families who all seemed to be having a great time.
So we did it. We found paradise in Koh Kood Thailand, perfectly complimented by the wonderful Soneva Kiri Resort. If you can live without a tv and enjoy nature, this just might be exactly what you have been looking for.
