“If you want shopping, go to a big city like Hong Kong, Singapore or New York. Don’t choose an escapist island The Maldives.”
I was having one of my early festive lunches last week. My ears picked up on the conversation of the next table where they were earnestly discussing their holiday plans, and particularly the comment about the attractions (or lack of) in the Maldives. I was quite tempted to lean across and say “But that is the point, it is total chillout relaxation. If you don’t enjoy watersports, spa treatments, and probably each other, it is probably not the place for you.”
I decided decorum was probably the best option, and simply returned to my glass of red celebration, and even declined to slip my business card across the table.
Fortunately there are many who do think The Maldives are an absolute paradise. Just as there is no such thing as the best hotel – just the right one, the same applies to destinations and resorts. If you want shopping, go to a big city like Hong Kong, Singapore or New York. Don’t choose an escapist island like The Maldives. Actually, Dubai can tick the big city shopping and beaches combination nicely, but that is probably the exception.
Equally in the Far East, multi-centre touring combination of cities, cultural attractions, ultimately ending with a few days on the beach is a particular forte of Chic, especially in Thailand or Vietnam. In reality very few (if any) destinations will tick every box at the same time, especially if there are two or more strong opinions on where and why to go. Happy compromise usually comes into it.
So don’t go to the Maldives if you require more than a relaxed beach destination built for quiet reflection and romance.
