Now I have to be upfront and say I haven’t done this. I would have loved to try it, but just didn’t have the time. I spoke to several people in Chiang Mai who had experienced it and they all said it was amazing.
The Flight of the Gibbons Zipline Canopy Tour is located in the quiet Mae Takhrai national park, 60 minutes drive north east from the city of Chiang Mai. The area is dense forest, with water falls and trekking trails. It is the natural habitat of several animals, including many Gibbon monkeys. It looks like a fantastic, totally authentic, and genuine adventure. You have over 5 kms of ziplines, including Asia’s longest single flight of 800m. In total you have 18 zip-lines, 3 sky-bridges, 3 nature walks and two tree houses.
It is a true adventure, yet at the same time designed to ensure safety. It was engineered in Europe, using a triple bolt system that keeps each line operating independently. The experience is not excessively physically demanding, but you need to be able to cope with some stair climbing and short hikes. You do need to be reasonably agile and fit, and of course like heights. They slowy ease you to the top of the forest canopy so you can adjust gradually. There is no minimum or maximum age (good news for me), but you do need to be at least one metre tall (3 feet 3 inches) and your weight should not exceed 130 Kls (286 Ibs).
The tour operates throughout the year. During the winter months, warm clothing is suggested for the early mornings, as temperatures start the day at around 10 Celsius.
The zipwire journey will typically take 80 minutes. If arranged as a full day tour, so you have a safety briefing, an opportunity for forest treks, and picnic style lunch.
The same company also operate half day Segway escorted tours around the city centre of Chiang Mai. A really fun and unique way to discover this fascinating city . Ask us for details .
The Flight of the Gibbons tour can be arranged in conjunction with any of our hotels in Chiang Mai. We think the Tamarind Village in particular combines well, as it offers a boutique, totally Thai style and is very well located. We would suggest at least 3 nights in Chiang Mai, as there is so much to see in and around the city. It has, in our view, one of the best restaurant scenes in the region. There are also excellent air connections, obviously with Bangkok but also the southern beach resorts of Krabi, Phuket and Samui.
