I am currently in the Algarve, as a guest of the newly opened Anantara Vilamoura Resort which opened last month. Really enjoying both the hotel and having the time to explore the area.
The hotel has 155 rooms and suites, attractive facilities, including three swimming pools, spa, gym and several restaurant options. It is located about a mile inland from the lively marina port of Vilamoura where you have many more restaurants, bars and some shops. The hotel offers a regular shuttle to the marina and beach where it has its own club area. Within the immediate area you have 5 championship golf courses, including one that separates the hotel from the beach.
The room quality is really good, very contemporary and spacious, with a good size balcony or patio. For families you have Junior Suites or One Bedroom Suites and from later this summer a kids club.
I was also given the time to explore the area. I have been through Faro many times but never took the time to discover the town. It really is charming, especially in the old city with narrow lanes, white washed houses and shops, grand buildings and numerous atmospheric restaurants.
After that we took a speedboat to reach ‘deserta island’, officially known as Barrera Island. This is 11 miles of pristine beaches – almost totally deserted – no hotels and houses, just a super sea food restaurant, Estamine. Very different and something I would suggest to any clients holidaying in this region. It’s about 30 minutes from Faro and offers something very different.
Tomorrow I’m off to a local market with the hotel chef and then some cooking lessons – might take a while in my case. More on that later.
