Lifestyle Choices: Experience
Just a few hours drive south West of Saigon, this area is known as the food basket of Vietnam, and produces over 80% of the fruit and vegetables grown in the country. Wonderfully scenic, with green rice fields, small villages where cars are still a rarity, water buffalos and ducks – and of course the mighty Mekong River as it ends it journey from China before flowing into the East Sea.
We can offer several tours from Saigon. A full day tour will certainly give you an idea of this fantastic region, but our suggestion would be a two day (one night) extension, with an overnight spent in the busy provincial town of Can Tho, small by Vietnamese standards although still with a population of 1m plus! Our hotel suggestion would either be the nicely boutique Nam Bo hotel, just 8 rooms and right in the heart of the city facing the river or the larger Victoria hotel which is on the outskirts of town, just 6 minutes by water taxi.
For those with even more time we suggest a 3 day (2 night) tour with one night at Can Tho and then take an overnight cruise on one the atmospheric Bassac sampan boats. Just 8 or 12 cabins, each with shower and WC, these converted teak barges sail daily between Can Tho to Cai Be or v v, and enable you to really savour the flavour of the river as you glide past remote villages. Wonderful experience, with dinner and breakfast served on board. Can Tho is a 4 hour drive from Saigon, Cai Be just 2 hours, so we can usually arrange your itinerary to maximise your time in the Delta. You will just take an overnight case on board with your main luggage kept in the car.
